After the scrimmages of Sunday afternoon, Badger Boys State competitive soccer matches between counties began Monday on the soccer fields in the lower campus.
Teams of nine athletes faced off on the two pitches continuing until the end of recreation time with the weather being a major factor in those games.
Sam Ewert, City of Schmedeman in Mitchell County, said the field conditions were definitely felt by players during their games.
“Competition was tough but the wet and tall grass really evened the playing field for us…we lost but I’m confident we can bounce back tomorrow, especially if the weather is nice,” Ewert said.
Fortunately, the weather cleared up the next day.
Players from all counties enjoyed the beautiful weather on Monday, with temperatures in the 70’s and the sun shining all day.
The inter-county match-ups count toward the overall athletic standings for each county, which are competing for a trophy throughout the week. Multiple counties boast teams consisting of varsity soccer athletes from around the state, ensuring that competition remains heated as the weather improves throughout the week.
Soccer’s hype is building around campus, and will continue to be a major part of this year’s Badger Boys State athletics.
