Walker County meeting struggles to be productive following booing, outlandish remarks

By Mordechai Tinney | City of Dewey, Walker County

There was unrest in Walker County’s meeting Tuesday night.

Most pressing was the official county budget, sparking disagreement and creating levels of animosity between the cities.

The events of the county meeting included booing and outlandish remarks, according to citizens from the City of Dewey.

Citizens of Farwell believe their County Board hadn’t heard their opinions. According to the opinions of citizens in the City of Farwell, they had been seemingly cast aside.

“We didn’t feel that our voices had been heard…our level of representation had crumpled under the pressure of time,” Riley Komp of Farwell said.

Farwell County’s Board of Supervisors plans to reopen the hot topic of the county budget later tonight.

Jeffery Martin from the City of Barstow said the meeting was difficult as they struggled to come to a consensus on a solution.,

“It was stressful to come up with a compromise that was not going to get booed down,” Martin said.

Martin said the final budget proposed was done by the City of Farwell and was subsequently booed. He said he hopes that because of a restructuring of the county meeting seating that Farwell would be more available to communicate with their county board of supervisors, and that to solve this issue, a stricter definition of what is allowed and what is not during county meetings regarding conduct would be addressed.

A Senator in the City of Dewey plans to propose legislation to the Senate on Wednesday that would move the City of Farwell to another county.
