Saturday evening the Badger State Boys Band opened events after about an hour of practice, taking up a large amount of space in the Willmore Center gym, filled to the brim by the various sections including brass and percussion.
The band played favorites like “Seven Nation Army” by the White Stripes and “The Final Countdown” by Europe. Through the drumbeats, the energy was palpable among the 800-odd citizens from 9 counties and 27 cities who were eager to begin their week of building the 51st state of the union.
Citizens were observed during registration bringing their instruments into the Willmore Center gym in preparation for a week filled with musical growth and entertainment. Instruments from saxophones to snares were played last night and the band also led BBS in “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the general assembly.
While citizens did not applaud after that performance out of respect, the performance was still well-received.
The band also held a practice Sunday morning in preparation for future performances at general assemblies, which is definitely something many citizens will be looking forward too.
“I like Badger Boys State Band because it is fun to play with other talented musicians and be able to play a song right away without barely rehearsing at all”, Justin Orme, a citizen of Philip in Dodge County said.
Orme also said that while the band may be a bit brass-heavy, the band continues to make the most and have fun.
Citizens in the band are not barred from running for political office because of their participation in band, adding an extra incentive to join. Look for the band playing at other general assemblies as the week goes on!
