Legion volunteer finds joy in citizens’ leadership growth through weeks at BBS

His name is Steve DuBois.
He is an Eagle Scout, father, American Legion Commander, retired Officer of the US Air Force, retired Airline Operator from U.S. Airlines, American Legion Rider, friend and Badger Boy State Retail Manager.
DuBois started volunteering at Badger Boys State six years ago when he was asked to do so by his colleague Russ Hanseter.
At the time, DuBois, a primary citizen through his chapter of the American Legion, took the opportunity to explore one of the Legion’s finest programs. As he started out his first year, he quickly discovered the impact that BBS can have on Wisconsin’s youth.
“All [the BBS citizens] I have met said they were impacted by their week in Badger Boys State for the good,” DuBois said. “They continue to be leaders through high schools and some even become leaders after.”
DuBois said BBS offers a leadership experience unlike other opportunities citizens may have been presented with before.
“This is one of the first times that you are treated like men,” DuBois said.
After all, the BBS program is one of the first glimpses of adulthood that participants receive.
He also explained how many students return to the program as counselors, further exemplifying the positive impact of BBS. DuBois reminds us that memories are something that you can hold onto forever.
Make sure to cherish these memories, because as many have said before, this might just be the best week of your life.
