Independent judge sets stage for citizens to challenge BBS laws

By Thomas Manion, News Editor | City of Rusk, Carpenter County

Carpenter County had its first independent judge run in opposition to both the Nationalist and Federalist nominees Monday evening.

Steve Savas from Knowles boldly stood up and declared he was running for the position of a circuit court judge at the county level.

This was a first for Badger Boys State as Savas used his unique interpretation of the BBS Constitution, citing law 1.04 section 2. Before the entire congregation of Carpenter, Savas argued his view of this law and convinced both party chairs and the entire room of his right to run.

“I believe that a judge should have no party affiliation, and that it’s best to run as an independent so my allegiance is to the people, the law and justice, and not the party,” Savas said.

After his approval and speech, Savas received an astounding round of applause from the county.

Savas did not ultimately win the election, but citizens are still inspired to push the laws given to them and strive for change.
