Recently, Badger Boys State cities have begun to pass ordinances for their citizens to follow.
However, the City of Rennebohm in Mitchell County has crossed the line in terms of how far its reach extends.
The City of Rennebohm posted an ordinance requiring any citizens from outside of their city to “air hump” through the hallways while within city limits Wednesday morning.
This was especially problematic for citizens of Salomon who must regularly pass through Rennebohm every day.
There is one glaring problem with this air-humping ordinance, however: it is illegal.
Hallways in cities count as state highways. As property of the state, cities need state permission to enact ordinances that affect hallways. Seeing as the state elections have not occurred yet, Rennebohm definitely does not have permission to enact the air-humping ordinance, making it unenforceable and illegal.
County Sheriff Cole Brown did not approve of the ordinance, either.
“I just think it’s dumb,” Brown said. “I don’t know why we [have to] air-hump our way around. Even as County Sheriff I don’t have to — they told me I don’t have to — but I don’t want my other fellow citizens air-humping the hell out of everything. It makes me feel awkward, you know what I’m saying?”
The ordinance was reportedly put in place as a response to the attempted annexation of Rennebohm by Salomon, which has since been dropped. Rennebohm also now faces a possible lawsuit from Salomon.
The City of Rennebohm needs to do one of two things: repeal the ordinance or simply don’t enforce it. Seeing as it isn’t legitimate in the first place, the only thing left for city officials to do is to put their pride on a shelf and take down the ordinance. In the future, they need to have better knowledge and respect for the law, as competent lawmakers should.
